The Department of Manipuri was established in the year 1967. Initially, the Department offered only the MIL (Modern Indian Language) course with a single teacher. Two decades later, in the year 1987, Elective and Honours Courses were introduced. Since then, both Pass and Honours courses are being taught. The Department offers Undergraduate and Post-Graduate programmes, and has introduced the Ph.D. programme in Manipuri from the academic session 2026-2027 with seven research scholars enrolled. At present, the Department has four sanctioned regular teachers and one Teaching Assistant.
